Building Respectful Relationships
At Montague School, Sexuality and Respectful Relationships Education is a vital part of our teaching and learning program, helping to prepare students for a safe, healthy, and fulfilling adult life. This education is delivered through a whole-school approach that is developmentally appropriate and fosters strong partnerships between the school, families, and the wider community. In accordance with Victorian Government requirements, Montague School provides Sexuality and Respectful Relationships Education within the Health and Physical Education (H&PE) and Interpersonal Development areas of the curriculum.
Curriculum Aims
Sexuality and Respectful Relationships Education at Montague School will:
Build collaborative partnerships between the school, families, and the broader community to design and deliver learning that responds to cultural and social needs.
Support students to understand the legal context surrounding sexual behaviour, gender, and equal opportunity, and help them identify sources of support while developing the confidence and skills to access them.
Work across curriculum areas and align with health and wellbeing programs, encouraging ongoing family involvement to strengthen our whole-school learning approach.
Address discrimination, inequities, and stereotypes based on gender and sexuality, promoting respect and inclusion through the use of language and resources that reflect and value all identities and genders.
Teach age-appropriate content related to same-sex attracted, intersex, and gender diverse individuals, making it clear that homophobic and sexist behaviours and language are unacceptable.
Provide staff with access to professional learning and current resources, including the Safe Schools Program and Our Watch, to ensure teaching reflects contemporary knowledge and best practice.
Consent
Montague School is proud to partner with Elephant Education to strengthen our commitment to the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) initiative. This partnership enhances our whole-school approach to promoting respect, equality, and emotional wellbeing through education that empowers every student to thrive.
Together, we are building a culture where all members of our school community understand the importance of respectful relationships, consent, and personal safety. Through interactive, discussion-based workshops facilitated by Elephant Ed’s youthful and relatable educators, students engage in learning that is real, memorable, and deeply relevant to their lives.
Grounded in evidence-based practice and aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, these sessions provide our students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make informed, positive decisions as they navigate adolescence and beyond. Elephant Ed’s national expertise—working in more than 500 schools and reaching hundreds of thousands of young people—complements Montague School’s focus on belonging, wellbeing, and the holistic development of every learner.
This partnership reflects Montague School’s dedication to fostering strength, knowledge, balance, and persistence in every student, ensuring our young people are equipped to build safe, respectful, and meaningful relationships within our school and the wider community.
